Well I have found that the two biggest jobs (for me anyway) has always been printing and sound with FreeBSD. However I have always used the handbook online to get the job done and it's always worked. I don't recall having to crate any new directories in the process though, but it has been a while since I went through the process. Also have not used apsfilter, in the 4.x series I used magicfilter, and since moving up to the 5.x release I have been using CUPS. I have an old HP DJ500 and I think that thing is supported by tin cans and string.
But all of this is just smoke in the wind, what matters is that you got printing working and it does what you want/need it to do. To this I say good job, and you may be a noobie to FreeBSD/Unix, but you are ready. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
