Disble remote login

Telnet is a part of inetd and most of inetd services you should never
run. Put this in your /etc/rc.conf file:
inetd_enable="YES"
Also, there are a lot of good primers about setting up a desktop for
the first-time. Check out http://daemonnews.org/new2bsd/. Some of it
is outdated but the rest should be good. I always think it is good to
invest in a book. If you are planning on sticking with BSD, it helps
immeasurably in the beginning, plus it helps support the BSD
community.
