I guess that you configured these two NICs with the same subnet mask, in this case 255.255.255.0. It won't work as long as you don't configure this machine as a network bridge (see [1]). Another way would be to use IPs of different subnets, e.g. 192.168.123.X and 192.168.124.X, both with 255.255.255.0; but you might have to care for routing between these subnets.
