Kernel version

I might be wrong, I am fairly new to FreeBSD so it wouldn't surprise me,
but the release version is the kernel version.  Unlike Linux, you cannot
upgrade just the kernel, you upgrade the entire OS.

Hope that helps.  Again, I'm sorry if you knew that and were just
talking over my head.

# uname -a
indicating release version and GENERIC i386 only
