Ken, does setting hw.igb.num_queues=1 keep your gateway router from crashing? 
I haven't been able to check this myself, as choking my internal igb(4)
interface w/ALTQ (see comment 10) has prevented crashes for the past 237 days.

FWIW, my gateway router doesn't have a free slot for an em(4) NIC :-(
