Ping results are sometimes wrong

Various link layers have different characteristics. Trying to optimize 
the averaging algorithm based on the specific behavior of one particular 
link layer is probably not useful for a network layer tool like ping.

If you are pinging in the LAN where this overhead matters, you might 
consider using arping from ports instead.
