breifly, at the risk of mentioning the obvious, which you may already know, did you: ?
atapicam_load="YES" (in /boot/loader.conf), make sure the dvd+... tools port, cdrdao?, is also installed.
actually, just re-check your settings with the FreeBSD Handbook:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/
under Storage -> Creating and using Optical Media (DVDs/CDs), ...
it contains a lot of other good tips as well.
