no sound with ICH6

A last word, just for the record.

Cabeling certainly can not be blamed, as I remeber I tried headphone on
the front jack (inlet?) and there was no sound for sure.

Perhaps the lastly tried params in sysctl.conf did the job?

hw.snd.maxautovchans=8
hw.snd.pcm0.vchans=4
