Make sure the volume is still turned up in the mixer after loading KDE. Run 
kmix (part of the kdemultimedia port/package) and adjust the volumes. Leave 
it running when exiting KDE and it will be automatically launched on startup 
and restore the correct volumes (closing the window will leave it iconified 
in the systray).
