Thanks for doing this, Mattias. I haven't had a chance all week. This
matches what I got when I did this last weekend.
Do you understand this i2c aspect of the track pad? Is that something that
is part of the mouse driver alone or do we need i2c support then port the
driver over?

Last night I have installed an Ubuntu 16.04 into an USB stick, as one
would normally install it into a hard disk.
I've booted 16.04 from DVD and directed the install process to an USB
key of 15.9 GByte which was visible for the installer as sdb. The
installation went fine on the 3rd try. After rebooting the installed
system from the USB key, I fetched and installed
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.7-rc6-yakkety/linux-image-4.7.0-040700rc6-generic_4.7.0-040700rc6.201607040332_amd64.deb
by just running
sudo dpkg -i linux*.deb.
After a reboot it says now:
Linux tiny-ubuntu 4.7.0-040700rc6-generic #201607040332 SMP Mon Jul 4
07:34:26 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
With this new kernel 4.7 of July the Elan touchpad in the netbook Acer
C720 is now visible as
I: Bus=0018 Vendor=04f3 Product=005a Version=0000
N: Name="Elan Touchpad"
P: Phys=
S: Sysfs=/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:15.1/i2c-7/7-0015/input/input15
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=mouse1 event15
B: PROP=5
B: EV=b
B: KEY=e520 10000 0 0 0 0
B: ABS=663800013000003
We have no support in FreeBSD for this i2c device. Comments in the
driver in Linux 4.7 say that is was written based on the cyapa driver
which we have in CURRENT.
I'm wondering about the elantech support which was recently added to the
psm(4) driver, see:
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=205690
but perhaps both are completely different devices with the same name.
