I think the deal isn't that 100% charge is bad, but overcharging is
what kills the battery.  The problem is that the battery level is difficult 
to measure so most laptops end up overcharging the battery quite
badly when trying to bring it up to 100%.  If you stop at 80% (which
seems overly conservative to me) then you never have to worry 
about overcharging.
