Hey Gary!
We've tried several USB wifi adapters at work with varying success. It
helps if they're based on an Atheros chipset. I haven't run across
that particular pc-card one but we can add it to the test list.
We recently put a mini-pci 3g evdo card in one of our laptops and got
it going fairly easily. Works great!
For a decent network config GUI, checkout PC-BSD, the desktop config
of FreeBSD. It's currently on 7.x but Kris Moore is working on the 8
release right now, which won't be to far behind the FreeBSD release.
