The Domain Debate
By Kate Farooqui, Marketing Manager UK
Is it better to build your web presence on a brandable domain like
Microsoft's, Bing.com or a keyword domain like Hotels.com? The
argument has been made by marketers on both ends of the spectrum. Some
argue on behalf of more brandable domains, like Adam Stafford, one of
the founders of web consultancy Fresh Egg, who was featured in a
recent article "Export warns against keyword-heavy domains" in
GlobalGold.co.uk. However, most of us in the domain industry would
argue the contrary, that keyword domains are invaluable to a business'
web presence. So who's right?

Buying Outside the Box: A Second Look at Brandable Domains
By Joe Palombo, Transfer Specialist
As you may have read in our feature article, brandable domains are
considered a bit more of a risky investment than their generic
cousins. However, before you write off all non-keyword domains, take a
second to think outside the box at the investment opportunities you
may be missing out on.
Quirky, appealing, and all together absurd domain names have become
some of the most profitable business models on the internet. Although
generic domains are still seen as the most premium investments, never
underestimate the brand power and draw of a catchy name.
Today, most domain names that are considered valuable are certainly
registered or up for sale for six figures. This is mainly because
people are looking at domains for their inherent parking value and
monetization through clicks, and not as much for their likeability.
However, the founders of such sites as Twitter.com and JibJab.com may
be among the most popular examples of what branding and a little
creativity can do for a domain.
Beyond their creative potential, quirky domains allow for inexpensive
paid searches. Once your business is established you now have top of
mind appeal to a web navigator and as soon as they type in your
company name, you show up without any competition. To help you see the
bigger picture, think of terms like "Hulu", "Fandango" and "Yelp" and
you'll quickly see why an unusual domain can make you come out on top
without the need for a generic domain as a safety net to fall back on.
In Sedo's July newsletter we polled you to see which quirky domain
caught your eye. Above Yahoo.com, Twitter.com and Amazon.com,
JibJab.com received 25% of the votes! With the money Yahoo! and Amazon
spend on advertising, JibJab, provider of funny eCards, was able to
get the last laugh.
The greatest asset to this latest trend is that there is no shortage
of these quirky domains. They are all in the eye of the creator. A
good catchy, quirky name, whatever it may be, can spring into online
gold. Let's see what you can do with some of these domains available
now on Sedo:

Sedo Speaks
Sedo's Q2 Market Study
Sedo, the leading online domain marketplace and monetization provider,
today announced the findings of its Q2 Market Study for 2009, which
revealed ongoing strong demand for premium generic domains. Highly
valuable online real estate yielded more than $15 million in sales,
with a sharp increase in sales of .net and country-code top-level
domains (ccTLDs).
The .net extension, which typically serves as an alternative for the
.com extension, has seen the highest average sales price recorded over
the past three years in Sedo's global marketplace. Also on the rise is
the average sales price for a ccTLD, which is currently greater than
the average of all domains sold on Sedo's marketplace in the second
quarter of 2009.
Sedo's list of highest selling domains in the second quarter of 2009:
Talk.com: $500,000
Spel.se: $266,000
HorseRacing.co.uk: $165,000
OnlineCasino.co.uk: $165,000
LiveStream.com: $100,000
TimeManagement.com: $100,000
90.com: $74,480
Concept.com: $53,200
Foros.com: $47,880
Descargas.net: $45,936
"The report underscores growing interest in generic domains due to
their tremendous value, as well as indicates emerging trends that will
impact the secondary domain market in 2009 and beyond," said Jeremiah
Johnston, chief operating officer for Sedo. "While we expect the .com
extension to remain on top, this study reveals the strong investment
opportunities that the .net extension and ccTLDs can provide to
businesses and individual investors and developers."

The (State) House Doesn't Always Win
By Ryan Sadler, Legal Team
Recently, a division of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety that
enforces gambling and alcohol laws instructed eleven national and
regional telephone and internet service providers (ISPs) to block
access by all Minnesota-based computers to nearly 200 gambling
websites. The state Department of Public Safety invoked a federal law
passed in 1961 that requires "common carriers" to block
telecommunications services used for gambling, however it is likely
that the legal reasoning is seriously flawed for several reasons.
