This is just a guess, but I think the console device may be switching to
a different connection. This is the point where FreeBSD kernel takes
over from the loader and, if the loader talks to one device and the
kernel to another, it will seem to hang.
If the console switched to a different device, this is exactly what you
will see. Try connecting something to whichever device you are NOT using
and see if it becomes active at this point.
