For KDE, I think you may have to have just the "startkde" line in your
.xinitrc file. (I've been using Ion and Fluxbox for a long time now).
Try with just the following in your .xinitrc file

startkde

Before typing "startx" again, check and remove /tmp/.X0-lock file if it
exists.
