Yes, in theory it should work that way. I have copied this part from the old
driver, but couldn't get it to work on my T41p. Now I'm still waiting for a
report that reports success on that area. I'll probably set it to read-only
until I figure out another way to set it (if there is any).

Not that I know of, since this might vary from model to model. But to quote
the README of the linux driver:
Thomas Gruber took his R51 apart and traced all six active sensors in
his laptop (the location of sensors may vary on other models):

3: HDD
4: GPU
5: Battery
6: N/A
7: Battery
8: N/A
