Dear Chris,
I have disabled the whole USB stuff. Moreover, to minimize further
side effects I have disconnected the PCMCIA Modem card; both without
success but with some extra message enlightening the interrupt storm:

Looking at the source code now the 3Com 3c575C XL seems
to enjoy some special treatment in contrast to 5.1R.
