presario 1275 pccard

having trouble with networking on a presario 1275.
it is basically the same with 5.2 and 4.10.
using a 3com 3c589d
during boot the pccard bus registers and the 3c589 registers,
the light on my little dongle lights for a moment.
then "PC-CARD setup: mem beep"
and the light goes out when it beeps.
afterwards ifconfig shows the card is configured, but no traffic
comes or goes.

any pointers on where to begin? should i stick with 4.10 or with 5.2?
