Buying a laptop. (HP, Compaq, or Gateway)

I'm running a zx5280 and have never gotten any form of bsd to boot.  It would 
start up ok, and then very early in the boot process just power down.  Tried 
tons of versions and switches to no avail.  I ended up with.. sigh... Gentoo, 
which at least has something close to ports.
