have you tried the nvidia driver out of the ports collection?
Take a look there:

| 1. The knoppix XF86Config file. It didn't work out of the box due to
| weird syntax errors that I don't think are related to the monitor stuff.

| 2. The hand-edited version of the knoppix XF86Config file that allows me
| to go in to the above-mentioned blackness without any other errors.
