Dell D800 External Monitor Xfree86

Greetings,
I'm trying to get xwindows to work on my external monitor (I have it
working just great on my laptop's internal monitor.) The only success
I've had is using the "standard vga" driver with 320x200 (256 colors). I
have a Dell Latitude D800 with and nVidia GeForce 4 4200 GO video card.
I'm running 5.1-current from Sep. 20, although I've been wrestling with
this since before then.
I booted Knoppix (a really sweet live-cd for linux) and it was able to
drive the external monitor just fine. I snagged the XF86Config file that
it auto-generated and tried to run it under FreeBSD, but it displayed the
same symptoms as my fumblings: The monitor does *not* go "amber" or
display "NO SIGNAL"; it just sits there. X is running programmatically (as
evidenced by ps showing xterms), but all I see is blackness.
Below are 3 things:
1. The knoppix XF86Config file. It didn't work out of the box due to weird
syntax errors that I don't think are related to the monitor stuff.
2. The hand-edited version of the knoppix XF86Config file that allows me
to go in to the above-mentioned blackness without any other errors.
3. My XFree86.0.log file
My tired-from-squinting eyes thank you in advance for any help :)

PS Would switching to the binary nvidia driver help with this situation?
