The display drivers for Windows recognize the difference between the
built-in LCD and an external monitor, and will remember what setting was
appropriate for whichever is active. I don't think X will do this
natively, but you could fake it with different startup scripts for X
pointing it at two different XF86Config files depending on which was
relevant.
