This morning I set
    acpi_load=NO
    hint.acpi.0.disable=1
and tried again. This time, the boot proceeded to trying to find
an init but hung.

Any suggestions?

I'm going try 5.0 and if that doesn't work use 4.8 to bootstrap and then
build a decent debugging environment for -current.
