You won't have to wait if your laptop has firewire (and a controller
FreeBSD supports). I use a Pioneer DVR-105 in a firewire-to-IDE case
and it works flawlessly for burning and reading DVD-R/RW and CD-R/RW.

I have an unremarkable Compaq 2700 which supports -STABLE pretty well,
but barely runs -CURRENT. Little to recommend unless you're worried
about your laptop blowing away in a windstorm; it's one of the heavier
"laptops" around.
