ESS Allergro ES1988 problems on 5.1R

Add following options into your /boot/loader.conf
(or /boot/loader.conf.local)
boot_verbose="YES"
hw.pci.allow_unsupported_io_range="1"
reboot your box and see if it helps you.
So if not, please provide more information about your
pcm driver status with the next command
$ dmesg | grep ^pcm
