I also tried the patch and for me it works so that the machine suspends but
the LCD doesn't turn off. After resume the LCD is turned off if the computer
has been on text console when suspending and if the computer has been running
X before suspending the LCD flahes few times after which the LCD is turned
back on.

Every time the computer suspends and after resume following messages can be
read from the console:

fwohci0: fwohci_pci_suspend
fwohci0: fwohci_pci_resume: power_state = 0x00000000
fwohci0: Phy 1394a available S400, 1 ports.
fwohci0: Link S400, max_rec 2048 bytes.
fwohci0: Initiate bus reset
wakeup from sleeping state (slept 00:00:25)
ata0: resetting devices ..
fwohci0: node_id=0xc000ffc0, gen=1, CYCLEMASTER mode
fwohci0: txd err= 0 No stat
this shouldn't happen
firewire0: 1 nodes, maxhop <= 0, cable IRM = 0 (me)
firewire0: bus manager 0 (me)
done
ata1: resetting devices ..
done

Interesting is the line saying "this shouldn't happen" the question is what
shouldn't happen?

I'm running Inspiron 8200 with A09 BIOS
