pcm ain't working - running 5.1 on Thinkpad 600

OK. I believe the 600 audio was different from the 600E, so my
suggestions are probably not relevant.

I can tell you that I just finished updating my 600E to CURRENT and the
sound works just fine as long as I make the change to "files".

Hopefully someone with an actual 600 can help you out on this.
