Really Slow Cron Job

As a quick refresher, a shell script that runs for a few hours doing
backups and STABLE cvsups and builds, runs for days when started by cron
on my ThinkPad X21 which is plugged in and running overnight. Bracketing
the script with "apm -e false" and "apm -e true" doesn't change that fact.
Changing the BIOS settings from maximum performance when plugged in and
maximum battery life when unplugged to "custom" when plugged in (defined
in part to mean fixed high cpu speed) didn't help when I tried it last
night.
Any other suggestions?
