Which file are you editing?

hints don't "override" if they're included the way my kernel config is setup.

Ie, UBNT_AR71XX_BASE.hints doesn't have any phymask/speed/duplex hints.
The ROUTERSTATION config includes UBNT_AR71XX_BASE and
UBNT_AR71XX_BASE.hints; the phymask/speed/duplex settings are in
ROUTERSTATION.hints.
Don't edit UBNT_AR71XX_BASE.hints. :)
