Let's start small, maybe? With the software, that does NOT build using Maven?

OpenOffice.org used to (still does) bundle all sorts of things with it too --
libxml, DB-clients, libjpeg, png, etc. But the port, gradually, evolved to make
it use the ports-provided alternatives.

It can be done.
