I think I finally got this working,
after half a year of trying.

I replaced alpha 6.4-stable with ia64 8.0-beta2.
All xdm, dbus and hal config options were replicated
from the alpha configuration. This would suggest
that hal, dbus and XDMCP are not interacting
correctly under 6.4 alpha. 

Now I can get kazekahase to work.
