which ftpd to use?

Thanks all for your response. My first attempts was to try FreeBSD's
native ftpd, which performed very well. >800 connections did result
in _much_ reduced load compared to proftpd with just 300 connections.
Also response time to establish a connection did not degrade.
Due to simplicity, uploads are now no longer possible, but I guess
it's not so much of a problem. I may run an addition ftpd on another
virtual ip just for uploads...
