Sorry to hear the bad news. At least you know the cause now.
I would have suggested connecting the new drive to the port that
your current working drive was plugged in to, and booting from the
bootonly CD/DVD, and see if the drive came up normally (w/o error).
If not, know the drive was bad.

Anyway, seems you found out for yourself.
