Making this Makefile work on FreeBSD

Hello all:
I'd really like to be able to say that this compiles with FreeBSD. when 
I use make, there are some issues; would anyone be able to look at this 
perhaps
and provide some pointers for making this compile both on Linux and 
FreeBSD?
