How to probe what application does in kernel (with sound device)?

To work with linux programs, linux_kdump (ports) has to be used.

Regarding the problem at hand, have a look at vchans (sysctl -a | grep  
vchan). Enable them if they aren't already and test again.

If there are still problems, I suggest to come over to multimedia@,  
post the OS version, the content of /dev/sndstat, the output of  
"sysctl -a | grep linux" and what you tried so far.
