open("/dev/cuaaX") is slow

The only signal cuaa devices ignore is carrier detect I believe.

Ahh, got to hate that :(
You might find the initial state devices handy in conjunction with stty to 
turn hardware flow control off although I'm not sure if it would make 
much/any difference.
