This can be solved by running in a xterm this script before trying to ro
gnome-terminal:

#!/bin/sh
export LANG=en_US.UTF-8
export LANGUAGE=en_US
export LC_COLLATE=C
export LC_MESSAGES=en_US.UTF-8
/usr/local/libexec/gnome-terminal-server &
