Hmm. I'm starting Plasma with startx and my .xinit script consists of

    exec ck-launch-session startplasma-x11

I guess, this is why it works for me. And I think this is what a login manager
should do too to register the session with consolekit.

So, I suspect it is LightDM's problem.

Just out of curiosity, can you try SDDM instead of LightDM?
