I have also encountered this issue.  It appears to be an incompatibility
between pango and Python 3.7 due to PEP 479 (
https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0479/ ).

This will most likely have to be fixed upstream by the Pango/Gnome developers,
not by the FreeBSD Gnome team.

The workaround is to step back to Python 3.6 until the issue is resolved.
