Sigh! My screen still looked odd, so I got actual pixel measurements:
Ver.    Height (inc. frame and title bar)
2.7.1   290
2.8     343
2.8.1   313

So, while the current setup is closer to what it once was, it's still
noticeably more widely spaced than 2.7.1.
