This upstream commit was the culprit:

and there was an upstream PR for this issue:

Fortunately, it was fixed by this commit:

https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnote/commit/?id=df504af

I backported the fix to Gnote 3.18 branch.  Please see the attached patch.
