I actually solved this one with the help of the Warren Block from
freebsd-questions at .
There was an option in xorg.conf in section "ServerFlags":
Option "AllowEmptyInput" "no"
Once I removed it and added:
Option "AutoAddDevices" "off"
the problem with freezing disappeared.
I am not sure if there is a bug that I stepped on, or this is expected.
I don't know why "AllowEmptyInput"="no" interfered with hald, but it did.
I believe it shouldn't interfere.
