Just a quick update. I did hear back from a couple of people (thanks!)
who are seeing possibly related problems. I dug into the actual build
problems and came to a nasty conclusion: security/openssl and a full
gnome build are incompatible because an earlier openssl is installed in
the base. In particular, there are some ports that will not build with
security/openssl and there are others that pull in libraries from both
openssl installations and break. I suspect that the ultimate fix for
this problem is to have only one openssl installation which at this time
probably means the removal of security/openssl.
I wiped out all ports (`pkg_delete -a`) and have started over. But this
time I'm being careful to not install security/openssl. This means that
I won't be able to use tor, but that's not a huge problem for me.
