Nautilus 2.24.0 doesn't update folder contents

Perhaps I didn't express properly what I meant:
When I sit at a remote - for example my wife's - machine and copy
files to my own computer's Desktop this file won't show up
automatically. The other way round it works: my wife's computer
runs gnome 2.20 on Debian Linux.

No, I think I have got all the default settings and no linked
directory.
I thougt - perhaps some kind of daemon doesn't do its work.
