Try to login in a dummy user and see if you still have the same problems.
My experience of upgrade, I had to clear a several of ~/.* to get GNOME
2.14 and other apps stable. Mostly are from .gconf* stuff.
As for the GDM, I don't use it but I remember there was a report in this
list. I will need to find that email, I think it was related w/ chmod.
Maybe it's different issue, just need to find that email to know for sure.
