Perhaps its something in the OS. I'm running:
$ uname -a
FreeBSD dagobah.vindaloo.com 6.1-PRERELEASE FreeBSD
6.1-PRERELEASE #1: Fri Feb 17 18:42:11 EST 2006
I'll upgrade it to 6.1-STABLE and retest.
