Under Applications > Accessories?  There should be nine entries in a
stock GNOME 2.14 desktop.  I'd
check /usr/X11R6/share/gnome/applications, and make sure things like
gedit.desktop, gnome-screenshot.desktop, and gnome-terminal.desktop are
properly installed.
