Steph (and Joe),

Unfortunately your work-around did not work for me. I have upgraded
Gnome to 2.12.3 (on 6.0-RELEASE-p4) and everything else, including cups,
to make sure every library was consistent and recent. I redid the two
edits that Joe suggested, and reinstalled cups-lpr with the cited flag.
I don't think the flag was necessary, actually, since I had already
tended to eliminating the conflict in lpd/cups print files.

I still get the printer requesting that I put in a tray of A4 paper.

I would really appreciate other advice on how to fix the problem.
Otherwise, I'll file a bug report, which this is looking like it is.

Frank
