Unexpected config problem--how to fix?

Login to X, and run /usr/X11R6/libexec/gnome-settings-daemon from the
command line.  What errors do you get?
Just the unhelpful "Segmentation fault (core dumped)" if i run as myself
or as root, and i get a 970K coredump file.

if theres any easy way i acan delete all the settings and start fresh im
happy to do this: i dont have fancy configuration settings and im willing
to lose them if it means im up and running again! But i dont want to
reinstall all of Gnome :-(
