FWIW, you can find a patch to eclipse that I use for 3.1+gnome 2.12 at
http://andreas.syndrom23.de/dump/eclipse-3.1-cairo.diff

It's basically what I wrote in 
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-java/2005-July/004092.html
put into a ready-to-use patch :)
